Potassium iodide for hydrological tracing
APPLICATIONS
L’Potassium iodide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula KI. It takes the form of a white crystalline solid made up of potassium K+ and iodide I- ions. Less hygroscopic than sodium iodide NaI, it is easier to handle. It takes on a yellowish hue when it contains impurities or when aged, as the iodide ions I- oxidize to iodine I2 on prolonged contact with air.
Iodide ions in aqueous solution are colorless and non-toxic to humans and the environment..
Their different chemical properties enable them to take part in several types of reactions :
• In organic chemistry, the iodide ion is a strong nucleophile (electron donor site), often involved in substitution reactions.
• In complex chemistry, the iodide ion tends to form complexes easily or even precipitate, particularly with Ag+ ions, which can be used in assays.
• In redox reactions, I- is the reducing agent in the I2/I- couple. Diiodine I2 is detectable by spectrophotometric measurements due to its yellow color in aqueous media.
